The State Government of Sikkim vide notification no. 54(103)Home/93/38 dated 5th July, 1994 divided the whole of Sikkim in two Sessions Divisions, one for East and North Districts and the other for South & West Districts of Sikkim with their headquarters at Gangtok. The local jurisdiction of the District & Sessions Judge (South) and District & Sessions Judge (West) covers the whole of South and West revenue districts of Sikkim respectively. He/She exercises all or any of his/her powers within his/her local jurisdiction as per the provisions laid down in the Cr. P.C, 1973 (as amended till date).
Local Jurisdiction in relation to a Court or a Judge or a Magistrate means the local area within which the Court or the Judge or the Magistrate may exercise all or any of its or his powers under the Code of Criminal Procedures and such local area may comprise the whole of the State or any part of the state, as the State Government may, by notification, specify. [Under Section 2(j) Cr. P.C. , 1973 (as amended till date)]

Legal ServicesDistrict Legal Services Authority (South & West) Sikkim
Legal Services Authorities as envisaged under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 (as amended) are in the process of establishing themselves throughout the length and breadth of this country and are getting geared up to meet the challenge of providing equal justice to all.
In suppression of the notification no. 16/LD/98 dated 23/01/1998 and in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 6 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 (39 of 1987) as amended in 1994 read with Rule 3 of the Sikkim State Legal Services Authorities Act, 1995 as amended in 1998, the State Government in consultation with the acting Hon'ble Chief Justice, High Court of Sikkim constituted the Sikkim State Legal Services Authority on 9th April, 1998.Thereafter, in suppression of the notification no. 15/LD/98 & & 13/LD/98 dated 23/01/1998 and in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 9 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 (39 of 1987) as amended in 1994 read with Rule 10 of the Sikkim State Legal Services Authorities Act, 1995 as amended in 1998, the State Government in consultation with the Hon'ble Acting Chief Justice, High Court of Sikkim constituted the District Legal Services Authority for South & West Districts of Sikkim on 13th April, 1998.The Sikkim State Legal Services Authority in terms of Section 11 A(1) of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 constituted the Soreng Taluk Legal Services Committee (West Sikkim), Ravangla Taluk Legal Services Committee (South Sikkim) and Gyalshing Taluk Legal Services Committee (West Sikkim) on 2nd November, 1998.The District Legal Services Authority (South/West), Taluk Legal Services Committees of Ravangla, Soreng and Gyalshing organize Lok Adalats in their respective jurisdictions. Apart from regular Lok Adalats, Lok Adalats for MGNREGA have been set up vide notification No. 51/SLSA/59 dated 03/09/2009, for the South and West Districts of Sikkim.Micro Legal Literacy Camp 2011, Chakung, West SikkimLegal Awareness Programme 2012, Kaizaley, South SikkimThe DLSA (South/West) in close co-ordination with the Sikkim State Legal Services Authority and TLSCs of Soreng, Gyalshing and Ravangla also perform various functions such as:
»Generating awareness and promoting legal literacy among the masses about their legal rights by holding seminars, workshops, training programs and awareness camps from time to time.»Holding micro-legal literacy and legal aid awareness camps in various areas where the masses are vulnerable.»Assisting in providing legal advice, assistance and legal aid to the poor and the needy (as per the provisions of legal aid).»Holding para-legal training programmes on various topics of concern such as environmental laws, basic civil laws, basic criminal laws, SADA Act, marriage acts, domestic violence, human rights, etc.»Organizing programmes on Women's Day, Labour Day, Environment Day, World Health day and such other occasions and rendering awareness on such topics.»Encouraging the settlement of disputes by the way of negotiations, arbitration and conciliation.»Making effective use of Alternate Dispute Resolution Centers and Family Counseling in the settlement of disputes.»Various other functions and duties as directed and instructed by the Sikkim State legal Services Authority.World Environment Day 2011, Kopchey, South SikkimDistrict Legal Services Authority (South & West) at Namchi and Taluk Legal Services Committees of Ravangla, Gyalshing and Soreng have been successful in carrying out their duties and functions as number of cases have been settled in the Lok Adalats, Mediation Centres and Family Counseling and various programmes and awareness camps have been successfully carried out throughout the South and West Districts of Sikkim.The members of the BAR Association of Namchi who are empanelled with the Sikkim SLSA have been very supportive and co-operative to the DLSA (South/West) and the TLSCs (South & West) in all their programmes.|Judges| |Jurisdiction| |BAR Association of Namchi| |Photo Gallery| |Acts & Laws| |Guidelines| |Contacts||Disclaimer| |News|© 2012 - District & Sessions Court (South Sikkim), Namchi, South Sikkim
